It is said that gen Z and younger will work in jobs that don’t even exist yet.

Drone managers, virtual reality developers, self-driving car mechanics and human technology integration specialist could be sought-after jobs in the future.

But what is a human technology integration specialist? Well as technology, particularly AI, grows increasingly sophisticated, businesses and people will need to learn how man and machine can work together most effectively.

What is a Gen Z? – Born in mid-1990s and current day. Most of Generation Z have used the Internet since a young age, and they are generally comfortable with technology and with interacting on social media.

As man and machine learn to work together they will also learn how to live together, as the work-space and the home-space will quickly become one. With cloud computing becoming normal for more businesses, the internet becoming faster and hardware becoming cheaper, lighter and integrated. The next generation of Property Developers will need to design to the rapidly approaching future.

What that future looks like cannot be predicted, after all everyone said “Who needs an iPad, I already have an iPhone and a laptop”, now everyone has a tablet.

What you can expect is a reduction in the reliance on office buildings and office space. This will bring a reduced need to travel to the office so people will live where they want to live.  Near the beach, the hinterlands, maybe even in a different city. After all, if you only needed to travel to the office once a week or a fortnight you would probably be happy to travel for 2 hours each way.

When it comes to the property I expect the integration specialist will be designing property features that include:

  • high-speed internet, everywhere
  • parcel delivery directly into an apartment
  • electric car charging
  • autonomous car waiting zones
  • meeting rooms
  • shared dining rooms and kitchens
  • the modular apartment easily reconfigured & potentially joined to neighbouring apartments
  • school incorporated into a master development
  • apartments with smart: appliances, lights, heating, speakers & microphones in all rooms
  • Smart door locks for my Airbnb guests
  • pantries full of food when you move in
  • robotic cleaning incorporate into the appliances and design, and
  • A VR room

This leap will likely bring the greatest disruption to the property industry. Sceptics will say this is 50 years away, geeks will say this is 5 years away, the truth is somewhere in the middle. The factor that will drive this change will be the future generations of managers, the Gen Zs and Gen Ys, that have grown up with a friend they have only met a couple of time but consider true friends because of social media. These managers will understand that seeing staff in the office doesn’t mean they are working, and they will know how to really check if someone is working.

So when you think what your child, nephew or niece will be don’t forget about the human technology integration specialist.
